Executive Perspective |
|
As the summer quickly turns to fall we have been busy planning our next home builds, ReStore marketing programs and updating our facility.
We have a plan to build seven row homes in Trenton and are still in need of sponsorships. If you are interested in a full or partial home sponsorship give us a call. Our three home development in Ewing is also progressing.
In July, as a partner in the East Trenton Collaborative, 54 homes were painted, some had new decks and a homeowner was able to sit outside for the first time in a year. This was accomplished by 400 youth and adults who participated in Work Camp.
The ReStore continues to get quality donations and will be stocking paint. We are working with several vendors to offer a consistent set of colors and finishes. If you need doors, windows or appliances, come see us. We have a good supply and the best prices.
Activities at the East Trenton Center are expanding. Demand at the food pantry has exploded, there were over 550 families served in July. Friday’s fresh produce is in high demand as we continue to work with Terhune Orchards and Mercer Street Friends to provide a healthy alternative to our neighbors. We have a new roof and are planning to replace our floor tiles with product bought from the ReStore.
We continue to face the challenge of getting donations for operating expenses. Everyone here is passionate about our mission and getting paid a fraction of the salaries they could earn in the private sector. Your support is critical in helping us keep the lights on. A small monthly donation via Pay Pal or through your local United Way will go a long way to help us achieve our goals. If you are in the neighborhood, please stop in and say hello. We can show you around and share with you the Habitat mission. Enjoy what remains of the summer!

In addition, Wells Fargo employees will be providing 300 hours of volunteer work to build the homes. Participation in this program was made possible by Ben Arroyo, the Regional Area President and member of the Habitat for Humanity of Trenton Board of Trustees, and Moses Santizo, a District Manager and member of Habitat Young Leaders and Professionals of Trenton. A huge thank you to both men and all the Wells Fargo volunteers who will be helping in the upcoming months.

Thank You Summer Interns!
Habitat for Humanity of Trenton was sad to say good-bye to our five summer interns this month. Almost 1,000 hours were put in this summer from Amethyst, Paolo, Amani, Saira and Stephen. The interns helped in every facet of Habitat’s functions—with construction, at the ReStore and in the office. A great thank-you to them all, and best wishes as you move on to your next adventure.

Sponsor for the Day! |
|
PerkinElmer is Habitat for Humanity of Trenton’s First “Sponsor for the Day!”
PerkinElmer employees had a Team Build day unlike any other they’ve done before—they spent the day working together on a Habitat construction site. Through a donation provided by the company, Habitat for Humanity of Trenton is able to put together a true team building experience for the employees, including exercises to improve problem-solving skills, a tour and discussion of the East Trenton community, a take-home thank you packet, and advertising on-site and online for the company. If your group is interested in a team building experience that allows you to give back while improving employee morale and skills, please contact the Community Outreach Director, Chelsea Naylor, at volunteer@habitatta.org.

Construction Update |
|
We have completed work on a rehabilitation of a house at 18 Oak Street. This was originally a Habitat built house that has been turned over by owners and renters the last 10 years. The rehabilitation started in the beginning of August and it is now on the market to be sold. The renovation scope is relatively minor. Walls, ceilings and some window frames need to be patched and sanded. The complete interior of the house needs repainting and the exterior siding and porches need to be repaired.

EXCITEMENT IS BUILDING…
We are working with our architect to finalize our seven home designs for the properties at 522-536 N. Clinton Ave in order to move the project forward to the Trenton Planning Board. There currently is a condemned home located at 532-534 N. Clinton Ave that has asbestos. We are in the process of getting bids for the abatement of the asbestos. Once the abatement is complete, we then can demolish the house and file for a building permit contingent upon the Planning Board approval. Stay tuned for updates on our website as the project progresses.
Several wonderful organizations have already signed up to become a house sponsor: Bloomberg (for a handicapped house in Ewing), Caxton Associates, NRTC, Wells Fargo, BOA, Mary Owen Borden and Capital One. There is still room for YOUR organization. For more information on house sponsorships, please contact Lacreda Riley at 609-393-8009 X226 or dev@habitatta.org.

National Night Out |
|
It was a beautiful evening on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 as the neighbors of East Trenton gathered at the East Trenton Center (home of Habitat for Humanity of Trenton) on the corner of Clinton Ave. and Olden Ave. Food, laughter and discussions were in abundance that evening culminating in three hourly drawings for ShopRite gift cards for the adults and three Vincents Ice Cream gift cards for the children. A special thanks goes to Liz Leonard, ETC Program Coordinator, and her crew of workers for a wonderful evening!

ReStore |
|
The Habitat for Humanity ReStore of Trenton is still striving for success. In our efforts to expand the ReStore we have been observing ways to better serve our customers’ needs. In September The Habitat for Humanity ReStore of Trenton has plans to be open to contractors, property owners and construction related customers from 9a.m. to 1p.m. every Tuesday. We are also looking forward to adding to our inventory and securing sustained relationships for tile, carpeting, flooring and assorted building materials. We will be showcasing a new indoor/outdoor paint department for our customers' convenience in the near future. These are just a few of the great things that are happening over at the ReStore. We will be sure to keep you posted on all new and exciting arrivals.
Hope to see you soon!

Did You Know? |
|
The benefit of homeownership has been well documented. Compared to renters of the same age, income and race, homeowners in the U.S. are 12 times wealthier; 15% more likely to vote; 16% more likely to belong to school or community organizations. Children of homeowners are 25% more likely to graduate from high school and 16% more likely to graduate from college. Habitat homes are more than “bricks and mortar.” These homes provide the foundation for healthy families and stable communities.
